!!?Ok Ok....I know Nicki Minaj has done, taken, and ran with the the whole Barbie mentality...But I had this shirt way before she was celebrated for her barbie-isms. Her image is fine with me i am a Nicki Fan and her definition of a barbie to her fits who she is.. i can dig it.
But my thoughts on the matter are slightly different .. i admired not really Barbie but Black Barbie.
Why? you ask....& Whats the Difference?
Well why is because Barbie herself not jsut had everything she could dream of.. all the profession she has ever wanted as a child, all the cars, the money, the man. family, but she was always known for her confidence and beauty, and she wasnt percieved as stuck up, or selfish. It was almost as if barbie was perfect, angelic if you will, and it is that that actually makes me admire barbie even more as a 20 something than i did when i was 5. Through life i can appreciate what is to have confidence and what it means.
Now the difference between the white barbie and the black barbie is simply this.. there is beauty in struggle... and black barbie has had to prove her self over and over again.. just like we as black women do. i believe that black barbie is not only more beautiful because of this she is stronger. Her battles are not just with society who may deem her unfit, or a lower quality, she must deal with children.. little girls of innocence who she is supposed to represent hate themselves so much they would rather pick her fairer skinned counter part. And she has been fighting for so long those little girls become women who have daughters and for some reason their misconception of beauty has still not changed..
I belive in you Black Barbie even though Walmart and Costco's try to downplay your worth by marking you down on store shelves as if your value is less than, i believe in you because i believe in myself.. To me you are the true definition of a Barbie. You Represent the struggle to be equal, a struggle than many of us face no matter your race, ethnicity, religion, creed, gender, or sexual orientation.
Dedicated to all the black girls who cry when people give them Black Barbies, be beautiful strong and loving, being yourself is worth it know matter who says anything different.
